Biography
Stephanie Kossmann
(b. 1969, Belleville, New Jersey, USA) Stephanie Kossmann is a contemporary artist and Canadian immigrant currently residing and working in Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia. Raised in a coastal town in Massachusetts, she has also lived and worked in Ontario and Vermont. Kossmann's artistic practice delves into the interplay of memory, perception, and mood, using color to evoke emotions, temperature, scent, texture, and humidity. Her approach combines oil paints and etching inks to achieve a sense of translucency, while cold wax is employed for its opacity. Typically working with her hands, Kossmann engages directly with her materials, allowing her to build and scrape layers that result in striking textures and depth. In her innovative approach to portraiture, Kossmann employs appreciative inquiry to transcend physicality and illuminate the inner life of her subjects. This method encourages individuals to shift their perspectives and creatively envision a desired future by focusing on their strengths, qualities, and achievements, rather than merely overcoming perceived deficiencies. Through her art, Kossmann fosters a transformative dialogue that celebrates resilience and personal growth. |
